Bishop came out of his net to try and beat hard-charging Senators forward Mika Zibanejad to the puck in front of the net. Sensing he wasn't going to be Zibanejad, he dove to knock the puck away. It was then that backchecking forward Nikita Kucherov collided with Bishop, hitting him in the head.
Bishop remained face-down on the ice as the puck kicked over to Sens defenseman Marc Methot who then scored on the empty net. The celebration was muted, however, when Bishop remained down on the ice while being treated by the Tampa Bay trainers.
He was helped off the ice and replaced by Anders Lindback in the Tampa Bay net and he will not return.
Official team update on Ben Bishop is an upper body injury and he will not return tonight #tblightning— Erik Erlendsson (@erlendssonTBO) January 31, 2014
It was a homecoming of sorts for Bishop, back in Ottawa where he spent some of last season before being dealt to the Lightning for Cory Conacher. That's probably not what he envisioned happening in his return.
Needless to say, if Bishop is going to miss any significant amount of time it's a massive blow for the Lightning. He has been simply stellar for them this season, being considered by most as the Vezina Trophy frontrunner at this point in the season with his 26-7-1 record and .933 save percentage.
