The New York Rangers have granted permission to at least one team to speak with the agent for team captain Ryan Callahan and that conversation has already happened, according to Darren Dreger of TSN.

So at least one team out there wants to figure out the feasibility of signing Callahan is if and when they trade for him. It also shows that the Rangers are willing to deal the forward away.

Reports earlier this week suggested Callahan was seeking a seven-year, $42 million extension to remain with the Rangers after this season when his deal expires. That probably is more than a little too rich for even a big-spending team like the Rangers who will have to be salary cap conscious.

Rather than lose Callahan to free agency for nothing, the Rangers would be wise to get assets back for a player that has a skill set that teams covet.

Callahan is not having the best season, which is why his reported salary ask was a bit surprising. That said, next year's market for unrestricted free agents isn't necessarily going to favor teams looking to sign an established NHLer such as the soon-to-be two-time U.S. Olympian.

The Rangers captain has 20 points in 38 games this season.

Dreger reported earlier Friday that the Rangers have been showing interest in Blues forward Chris Stewart, whose cap hit is awfully similar to Callahan's.

It seems things are heating up and the fact that the NHL freezes trades starting Feb. 7 at 3 p.m. for the Olympic break may be putting a few GMs' feet to the fire. This could be a very interesting week.
