Even with the NHL on official hiatus for the Winter Olympics, the job of the Department of Player Safety never ends.

On Tuesday the league announced that Colorado Avalanche defenseman Erik Johnson has been suspended for two games for his slash on Islanders forward Frans Nielson on Saturday.

It's not often that we see suspensions for slashes in the NHL, most of the focus is on illegal checks, whether they be to the head, the back or the knees. But in this case the department made an exception with Johnson's violent slash right onto Nielson's hand.

Perhaps playing in a factor in the suspension coming to be is the issue that with the slash, Nielson broke his hand and according to Arthur Staple of Newsday will miss a month. If there's good news in that for the Isles, two and a half weeks of that time are being taken up by the Olympic break so he'll likely only miss a few games after the league resumes, but still probably more than Johnson will.

Johnson has no prior history with the NHL in terms of supplemental discipline so this starts his record. In addition to the two games, he was also fined two games' salary, which totals $38,461.54.

The suspension to Johnson was the first ban handed out by the DPOS in more than a month. The last player suspended was Tyler Myers in early January. That streak was nice while it lasted.
