Sabres call on emergency backup goalie after Ryan Miller trade

Who doesn't love a good emergency backup goalie story?

The Buffalo Sabres had an unfamiliar face behind the bench wearing the big pads. After the team dealt Ryan Miller to the St. Louis Blues earlier in the evening, there was no time to dress another goaltender. Enter Ryan Yinz, listed by the Sabres TV broadcast as the Director of Hockey Technology for the Sabres-owned Harbor Center.

We've seen emergency backups before in the NHL, but never one quite as inexperienced as Yinz, with his last recorded competitive playing experience coming in high school in the early 2000s.

Yinz previously worked as a video scout for the Sabres. He served in a similar capacity for the Clarkson University hockey team. According to a media release from the school in 2007, Yinz attempted to walk on for Clarkson's NCAA Division I hockey team. He did not make the team, but did serve as the team's video coordinator. Yinz was a three-year starting goalie at Lancaster (N.Y.) High School, according to the release.

Good thing the Sabres record is becoming only relevant in where they end up in the draft, otherwise this emergency backup situation could have been rather nerve wracking (and may still be if Yinz is needed).

Jhonas Enroth is between the pipes for the Sabres, and for Yinz's sake, hopefully Enroth stays there. Either way, quite an experience for Yinz.
