NHL trade rumors: Phoenix Coyotes may be active at deadline

The Phoenix Coyotes aren't often believed to be among buyers at the trade deadline. However, with new owners in place and a rather large amount of space underneath the salary cap, they could have eyes on being active at the deadline this time around. James Mirtle of the Globe & Mail reported the following:

The Coyotes have been an up-and-down team this year, but getting a little extra help could make a big difference towards making a play for a wild card spot. As Mirtle notes, the Coyotes are just three points out of the last playoff spot in the West.

If the new owners are serious about making this a competitive team, they might have to open up their wallets a bit with the space they have available.

Like all teams, the Coyotes are in need of some scoring depth, but the defense also needs some shoring up. It's hard to know what they'd be able to sell off in order to bring in an impact player at the deadline. So perhaps it may be worth Don Maloney targeting some smaller pieces to plug a hole here or there as opposed to making a deadline splash.

Either way, the Coyotes have to tread lightly as the postseason race in the West is going to be a tight one the whole way. Getting too aggressive with limited assets in the pipeline doesn't make long-term sense.
