The Montreal Canadiens have acquired veteran defenseman Mike Weaver from the Florida Panthers in exchange for a fifth-round pick in 2015. The 35-year-old is a solid shutdown defenseman who is on the last year of a two-year, $2.2 million contract.

It's a small deal, but it helps the Habs slightly upgrade their blue line, which has really struggled of late. It's also a small price to pay for Montreal to nab a guy that's played 18-plus minutes a night.

Weaver will probably take away some minutes from Douglas Murray who has not been very good and puts less pressure on Montreal's young players like Jarred Tinordi to play a big role right now.

Will this trade make a huge impact? Probably not, but it helps the Habs and allows the Panthers to get a little something in return for a guy who they weren't re-signing anyway.
