Though he hasn't played since Nov. 29 after sustaining a serious leg injury, Stephane Robidas is expected to return to action this season, but when he does, it won't be with the Dallas Stars. Robidas has been traded to the Anaheim Ducks. In exchange, the Stars received a conditional fourth-round pick.

Robidas was stretchered off after fracturing a bone in his right leg on Nov. 29, but made quick progress in recovery. Before going down, Robidas had four goals and an assist in 24 games while averaging nearly 20 minutes per game.

The 37-year-old veteran has been a solid two-way veteran over his 13-year career. His four-year, $13.2 million deal with a cap hit of $3.3 million expires at the end of this season.

For the Ducks, there is some risk in acquiring a player coming off a pretty significant injury, but he may not need to carry a heavy workload alongside a very talented team and particularly a gifted young D corps.

Either way, he brings experience and real defensive-zone talent to a team that needed some fortifying for the postseason.

The Stars, meanwhile, don't have great defensive depth, so it's a curious move on their part as a team still very much in the thick of the playoff race in the West. In fact, if the season ended today, the Stars would have the last wild card spot.

It's a low-sell for the Stars, with Robidas' age and health in question as well as the fact he has an expiring contract. It should be interesting to see if general manager Jim Nill has anything else in the works after offloading a rather talented veteran in the middle of a playoff race.

Dallas now owns nine picks in the 2014 NHL Entry Draft, so that does give them a bit more flexibility on draft day.
