After the forward requested a trade early this season and reiterated that desire recently, the Capitals sent him to the Phoenix Coyotes on Tuesday. The Capitals send Erat along with prospect John Mitchell to the Coyotes in exchange for Rostislav Klesla, Chris Brown and a 2015 fourth-round draft pick.
Trading Erat took GM George McPhee a long time given the cap constraints across the league and Erat's $4.5 million cap hit for this season and next. In dealing him, though, they get a defenseman in Klesla and that at least has been a position of need for the Caps approaching the deadline. Whether or not Klesla can be the answer is something we'll have to wait and see. His health will be a big factor in that, he has only played 25 games this season.
Erat was traded to the Capitals last season at the deadline from the Nashville Predators. He has struggled to score in Washington, with just one goal in 53 games, an empty-netter. He does have 23 assists, however.
