The Buffalo Sabres had a few players all but guaranteed to be traded at the deadline and at the last minute they were.

GM Tim Murray made two last-minute deals by trading forward Matt Moulson to the Minnesota Wild and trading goaltender Jaroslav Halak to the Capitals. Both players were acquired by Buffalo in trades earlier this season.

Moulston figured to be in relatively high demand as he has a bargain of a salary cap hit while being a scorer on the wing. That was attractive for the Wild, who always could use more scoring. The trade also sees Cody McCormick headed to Minnesota. In exchange the Sabres get some undisclosed draft picks and defenseman Torrey Mitchell according to John Vogl of the Buffalo News. Thus ends Moulson's short stay with the Sabres. He is a free agent after this season.

Halak's stay was much shorter. Acquired just a couple of days ago in the trade for Ryan Miller, Halak was dealt to the Washington Capitals for their backup goalie Michal Neuvirth and a sixth-round draft pick. There was a lot of talk that the Caps needed help in goal and Halak will give them some of that, even if it's a bit uncomfortable considering Halak single-handedly beat the Capitals in the playoffs in 2010 when the Caps were real Cup contenders.

Hats off to Murray, who has done a lot of work since coming on the job a short while ago and flipped his tradeable players for a lot of assets to really get the rebuild under way.
