The Detroit Red Wings are so beat up right now it's almost laughable. Almost.

The latest injury came to defenseman Jonathan Ericsson in Tuesday night's home win over the Toronto Maple Leafs. Ericsson broke his middle left finger and will undergo minor surgery to repair it. It's going to keep him out longer than initially reported.

Of course, the Red Wings could use him or any of their regular players right about now in the thick of a playoff race and with their 22 straight postseason streak on the line because they've been making that push without a lot of their regulars.

Their depth at center has been depleted without Henrik Zetterberg, Pavel Datsyuk and Stephen Weiss. They have had to make so many call-ups from AHL Grand Rapids that they've run out of stalls in the dressing room.

It's a good thing the Wings had the best AHL team in the league last season to draw on with these injuries. They are still alive in the playoff race, just one point out of the last wild card spot.

Ericsson was asked to take on a bigger role for the Wings after Nicklas Lidstrom left two seasons ago and as a result Ericsson has been averaging more than 21 minute per game in each of the last two seasons. This season in 48 games (he missed time with a rib issue earlier) he has a goal and 10 assists.
