The defeding Stanley Cup champions are already without one of their top stars Patrick Kane for the rest of the regular season, now they will be hoping captain Jonathan Toews won't be joining them.

On Sunday night in Pittsburgh Toews had to leave the game early after taking a big hit from Penguins defenseman Brooks Orpik into the boards. When Toews got up he was favoring his left arm/shoulder and immediately went to the dressing room (GIF via @myregularface).

Toews was not on the bench to start the third period.

The Blackhawks have yet to release any details on Toews' injury, meaning all Blackhawks fans will be keeping their fingers crossed that Toews will be OK, or at least not out for a long time. It goes without saying that he's a pretty important player to their success.

UPDATE: From the sounds of it, the early prognosis is good for the Blackhawks.

As to the hit itself, well obviously it's quickly become the subject of debate, especially with Toews injured. It's very close in a couple of regards and the referees didn't deem it to be a bad hit. Orpik's skates come off the ice but it looks like that happened after contact and while there was contact with the head, the principal point appears to be Toews' arm/shoulder. It didn't help Toews' situation that he was a bit off balance.

More important than the debate about Orpik, though, is the status of Toews moving forward. He is third on the team with 68 points in 75 games this season behind 28 goals.
