The Toronto Maple Leafs announced Friday that Brendan Shanahan will assume the role of President and Alternate Governor with the organization effective immediately. That leaves a void in a rather important position for the NHL in its department of player safety. The NHL announced Friday that Stephane Quintal will be the man to fill Shanahan's shoes for the remainder of the regular season and playoffs.

Quintal has been part of the department since 2011, holding the position of Safety Manager. He is a veteran of 1,037 NHL games including stints with the Boston Bruins, St. Louis Blues, Winnipeg Jets, Montreal Canadiens, New York Rangers and Chicago Blackhawks.

The new disciplinarian will work alongside Brian Leetch, Patrick Burke and Damian Echevarrieta, who all have been with the department of player safety all season. The department will be overseen by NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly, according to ESPN's Pierre LeBrun.

Quintal won't have to waste any time getting into the job as Mike Rupp is due for a hearing Friday after his high hit on T.J. Oshie Thursday night.

Since Quintal has been under Shanahan since the department opened essentially, it's hard to believe there will be many differences in how the operation is run.
