In a bit of news that should make Jaromir Jagr happy while saddening hopeful Maple Leafs fans, Peter DeBoer is going to be back as the head coach of the New Jersey Devils.

There had been some speculation growing fast that DeBoer, whose contract is up this offseason and has failed to reach the playoffs either of the last two seasons, could be ripe for a job with the Leafs should new boss Brendan Shanahan elect to replace Randy Carlyle. The obvious connection there is DeBoer's ties to David Clarkson, both from New Jersey and from the junior ranks. Plus, his team in New Jersey is the polar opposite of the Leafs in the puck possession game.

But his time in New Jersey isn't done.

Lamoriello didn't say anything more but it's expected it will be for a few more years beyond just next season.

With that, the chances of Jagr staying with the Devils just went up. He said last week that if he were to return to the Devils, he hoped that DeBoer would still be the coach, a pretty ringing endorsement of DeBoer.

DeBoer hasn't been able to get the Devils in the playoffs either of the past two seasons but three seasons ago he began his Devils tenure by leading them all the way to the Stanley Cup Final against LA.
