Two days ago, Ryan Getzlaf got pelted in the face by a one-timed shot off of Tyler Seguin's stick. It caused a deep cut, requiring many stiches and a rather mangled face. Early Friday morning, Getzlaf's wife was giving birth to the couple's daughter. So despite all that over the last 48 hours, Getzlaf was back to work Friday night for the Anaheim Ducks and looked no different aside from the giant jaw protector on his helmet.

In the first period, with the Ducks trailing the Dallas Stars 1-0, Getzlaf showed what makes him a likely Hart Trophy finalist.

First, he pinched off Erik Cole trying to take the puck up the boards, forced the turnover and headed for the net. He made one move to back off Sergei Gonchar and waited for goaltender Kari Lehtonen to show him an opening, which he did. From in tight, Getzlaf roofed the shot to tie the game and send the Honda Center into a frenzy.

The goal capped a second half of the period in which emotions were running extremely high. The physical side of the game picked up a notch, as did the intensity. It seems like it's in those kinds of games the Getzlaf finds a way to kick his own into high gear.

And to think, that goal is only the second-best thing to happen to Getzlaf today. That's a pretty nice little Friday he's having after Wednesday and Thursday probably could have gone a little better.
