A few players are finding a use for their sticks this postseason beyond playing and shooting the puck; spearing.
LA Kings forward Mike Richards is the latest player guilty of a spear, jabbing his stick into the midsection of Sharks forward Logan Couture in the midst of the Sharks' 7-2 dismantling of the Kings on Sunday night. Clearly frustrated by the game already well out of hand, Richards drew a four-minute penalty for his "errant" stick.
But much the same as Corey Perry (warning) and Milan Lucic ($5,000 fine), Richards won't be facing a suspension for his actions (via Pro Hockey Talk), though a fine could still be in play if the league doesn't feel that the double minor was sufficient enough. It could very well go without any further punishment. However the Sharks and Couture will certainly remember.
Richards has had an underwhelming season altogether for the Kings with just 11 goals and 30 assists this season, the lowest goal total of his career since 2006-07, including the lockout-shortened season in 2013.
