The Colorado Avalanche not only lost Game 3 against Minnesota in overtime on Monday but they also lost defenseman Tyson Barrie for the remainder of the series ... and more if the Avalanche advance.

Barried left the game early in the second period with a lower-body injury and after the game Avs coach Patrick Roy had the bad news: Barrie is out 4-6 weeks with an injury to his MCL.

The injury came courtesy of Minnesota Wild forward Matt Cooke. The two met in the neutral zone but before the hit Cooke stuck out his leg and changed his path just a slight bit, the result a knee-on-knee hit obviously with Barrie getting the brunt of it.

Cooke was assessed a minor for kneeing but it could have been much worse than that with a pretty clear attempt to make the hit that he did make. Don't be surprised if he gets a call from the Department of Player Safety.

UPDATE: Cooke will visit with the league over this hit. In fact, he's been offered an in-person hearing, meaning he could be looking at a suspension of more than five games. Ruh roh.

That will be of little solace to the Avalanche, though, because Barrie's loss is awfully tough. In just his third season with NHL games, Barrie had a breakout on the Avs blue line this season with 13 goals and 25 assists in 64 games. In the first two games against the Wild he had two assists and was averaging nearly 25 minutes per game, a lot of minutes that are tough to just replace.

The Avs already have a bit of a weakness among their D corps, losing Barrie is huge. With how tight the first three games of this series have been, he will undoubtedly be missed on the back end.
