New York Rangers defenseman John Moore has been suspended two games for his hit to the head of Montreal Canadiens forward Dale Weise.

The hit came in the neutral zone in Game 5 on Tuesday night after Weise dumped the puck into the offensive zone. Moore came from the side and while the hit was not late, Moore delivered a hit upward and into the head of Weise.

After initially saying the hit was late and the right call, Rangers coach Alain Vigneault had a slightly different take on the hit on Wednesday morning, or at least he articulated his point differently.

"It was a hit that Johnny caught him a little high in the chest, player didn't see it coming," Vigneault said. "It probably warrants the penalty that was given on the ice. Other than that, I don't see what else it could warrant, but I've been surprised before. We'll see what happens."

Moore earned a five-minute major and a game misconduct for the hit in the game.

Weise left the game for a few minutes but did return to the Canadiens bench in a somewhat surprising twist. It's no less surprising and questionable after Renaud Lavoie reports that Weise did suffer a concussion on the hit.

This is the second suspension of the Eastern Conference finals, Brandon Prust earned a suspension of the same length for his hit on Derek Stepan in Game 3.

Now it means that his Eastern Conference finals are done. The next game he plays will either be in the Stanley Cup Final or next season. He played in 74 games this season, posting four goals and 11 assists while in the playoffs he has one assist in 17 games, averaging 14:06 per game. Without Moore, the Rangers could turn to former Canadiens defenseman Raphael Diaz.
