After carrying a good portion of the play in the first period, the Chicago Blackhawks had to be disappointed to be trailing the Los Angeles Kings 1-0 after the opening 20 minutes. Perhaps they were angry more than anything with the way they came out to start the second period of a must-win Game 6 in the Western Conference Final.

They wasted little time.

After Jonathan Toews drew a penalty on Anze Kopitar, the Blackhawks power play went to work. They had already had one advantage in the first period in which they failed to generate a shot, but the Blackhawks second chance looked miles better.

When Patrick Kane took the puck on the half wall, he spotted Jonathan Toews at the side of the Kings net. He dished it off and headed for the net. The Kings didn't stand a chance. Toews hit Kane on the tape and he snapped home a shot over Jonathan Quick's right shoulder to make it 1-1 just 1:12 into the middle frame.

With the momentum decidedly in Chicago's favor, they struck again, although in less surgeon-like fashion than the first goal.

Patrick Sharp and Ben Smith streaked up the ice on an odd-man break. Sharp dished the puck off to Smith as they neared the net, but Smith couldn't handle the pass for what would have been a quality scoring chance. Smith then had to collect it behind the Kings net. With Quick still recovering from trying to make the first save, Smith went to put the puck in front. It banked right off Quick's pad and in to give Chicago the lead and a little bit of relief.

Sharp also had an incredible chance to make it 3-1, but Quick made a spectacular save.

The Blackhawks had a 2-on-0 break with Marcus Kruger and Sharp. Kruger dished at the last minute to Sharp, but Quick got over just in time to get a piece of it. The shot went off his shoulder and then the crossbar and out. GIF via @myregularface:

That could have been a big blow at that point with the Blackhawks buzzing like they were.

What a start to the second for Chicago while playing in desperation mode.
