Talk to many long-time hockey people – analysts, journalists, coaches and players – and most will tell you the 2014 Stanley Cup Playoffs was one of the most exciting of all time. With a record 93 games played over the course of the postseason, there were plenty of opportunities for late-game heroics and many overtime thrillers.
There were so many moments that won't soon be forgotten and even if you have a little trouble remembering the details, the age of video of everything ever won't let your mind stray far.
The good people over at Shnarped put together a super cut of every single overtime goal from the 2014 Stanley Cup Playoffs to help capture some of the finest moments of a most thrilling campaign. From Dale Weise's Game 1 stunner against Tampa Bay for the Montreal Canadiens to Alec Martinez's Stanley Cup clincher for the Los Angeles Kings, the video spans a rather incredible seven weeks of hockey in chronological order.
The thing that may strike you as you look back at these clips is just how different the playoffs looked at the beginning. For instance, Patrick Marleau's Game 3 overtime winner for the San Jose Sharks back in the first round sure seemed to spell doom for the Kings. As we know now, it sure didn't. And how about the back-to-back overtime winners for the St. Louis Blues to start their first-round series with the Chicago Blackhawks? Or the back-and-forth between the Minnesota Wild and Colorado Avalanche. And how about how close that Bruins and Canadiens series was?
So many insane things happened over the course of this postseason, it's almost hard to remember it all. So it's things like this video that make you appreciate just how special a playoff year this was. One for the ages for sure.
Though it is bittersweet for such a great season to end, the 2014 Stanley Cup Playoffs gave us more than enough excitement to last the summer. Or at least we can hope it did.
