While the Colorado Avalanche figure out what to do with two prime free agents, they first re-signed another one of their players in need of a new contract, inking Jamie McGinn to a two-year extension.

McGinn was set to become a restricted free agent but the 25-year-old was able to strike a deal and avoid the drama. Per Pierre LeBrun, the deal will carry a cap hit of $2.95 million over the two seasons.

"Jamie is coming off a very good season and played an important role for our team," Avalanche Executive Vice President of Hockey Operations Joe Sakic said. "We're excited to have him under contract for another two years."

It was a career season for McGinn, who finished with 38 points in 79 games, one better than he had in 2011-12 when the Avalanche acquired McGinn from San Jose. His 19 goals in a third-line role were the second most of his career, one behind that 2011-12 total.

Naturally, he is pretty excited about his new contract.

Now the Avalanche will be hoping that negotiations with UFA Paul Stastny and RFA Ryan O'Reilly, with whom things are already getting very testy, will be just as smooth. The Avalanche have a very strong young core that would ideally be kept together for years to come.
