Monday is the last two for teams to use compliance buyouts before they are gone forever (or until the next CBA) and a couple of teams got one in before the buzzer.

One of the rumored buyout candidates all summer has been Anton Volchenkov in New Jersey. Devils GM Lou Lamoriello had gone back and forth between him, Bryce Salvador or not using his second buyout at all.

Well on Monday, Volchenkov hit the waiver wire and Rich Chere indicates it is indeed being done to buy out the final two seasons of his contract.

By buying out Volchenkov, that's $4.25 million against the cap in each of the next two seasons that the Devils are off the hook for paying. Since signing a big deal with the Devils, Volchenkov has seen his ice time slowly drop to the point that the defensive defenseman was anything but a bargain for his cap hit.

This past season Volchenkov played in 56 games, recording eight assists for the Devils. Now with some more cap space freed up, the Devils might be on the lookout for some more offense after being one of the worst teams last season in that department.

Volchenkov wasn't the only player to be put on waivers for a compliance buyout on Monday as the Flames did the same with defenseman Shane O'Brien.

O'Brien has just one season left on his existing deal for $2 million against the cap. It's hardly a major issue for a team that is going to be in no danger of hitting the salary cap but seeing how O'Brien played just 11:16 in 45 games with the Flames last season, it begs the question of why keep him? It hasn't been a good fit since a trade from Colorado.

Assuming both players breeze through waivers (shouldn't be an issue) and are bought out, they will join free agency, which opens on Tuesday.
