Paul Stastny is now a member of the St. Louis Blues.

The Blues had long been on the hunt for a centerman and were reportedly on the trail of Stastny for a while so it didn't take long for them to sign him to a four-year deal early in free agency on Tuesday.

The four-year deal comes with a reported cost of $28 million, or $7 million annually. It's a slight raise from his previous deal with the Avalanche.

Stastny was clearly the top center available and was guaranteed to get big money after he couldn't reach a deal with the Avs. They were hoping to retain him but at a lower cost. Stastny reportedly gave the Avs the right to match any offer but $7 million per season isn't a price they were willing to pay, apparently.

Now in St. Louis, Stastny helps to further beef up a very strong team in the Blues and gives them an interesting question to answer: where does he play? Stastny could take over at center and perhaps David Backes could be on his way to the wing.

Given the term isn't terribly long at four years, you have to like this deal for the Blues. Even though it's at a high annual cost, he's one of the best free agents available and worth it.

Stastny is coming off a strong season with the Avs that saw him put up 25 goals and 35 assists in 71 games.
