The Carolina Hurricanes revealed Tuesday that captain Eric Staal suffered an injury to a core muscle during his offseason training. The star forward already underwent surgery to repair the injury. Though surgery never sounds great, the prognosis for Staal's ability to be ready for the 2014-15 season is good according to the team.

"Eric notified us of the injury late last week and flew to Raleigh and then Philadelphia to be evaluated," Hurricanes general manager Ron Francis said in a statement. "By having this procedure now, Dr. [William] Meyers believes Eric will be able to return to action for training camp and be at full health for the start of the regular season."

The Hurricanes will need Staal healthy right out the gates as they enter the 2014-15 season under an entirely new regime led by Francis and new head coach Bill Peters.

Staal is coming off a bit of a disappointing 2013-14 season by his standards. He put up 61 points, the lowest total of his career in a full season aside from his rookie campaign. The two-time 40-goal scorer had just 21 goals last season in 79 games.

Without much improvement to the everyday roster this offseason, there's going to be a lot of pressure on Staal to bounce back and help lead the team under this new regime.
