PHOTOS: St. Louis Blues unveil new jerseys for 2014-15

By Chris Peters | Hockey Writer

The St. Louis Blues unveiled new jerseys for the 2014-15 season, and to be honest, it couldn't have come sooner. Gone are the bland jerseys with only thin piping to dress up the team's threads. In are the more traditional-looking jerseys that bring back the horizontal stripes at the bottom of the jersey and leaves the iconic Blue note looking as good as it ever has.

The team unveiled the new look with St. Louis native and recent signee Paul Stastny, as well as captain David Backes and other Blues in front of fans at the Ballpark Village as part of the team's ice breaker event.

Here's a close-up of T.J. Oshie in the new home jerseys via STLBlues.com.

The new uniforms are very similar to the ones the Blues wore from 1998-2007, with a slight difference in the striping. It may be a slight retread, but it goes back to one of the best looks the team has had in a history that also included some less aesthetically pleasing looks. At least the team never let those trumpet jerseys ever see the light of day.

Here's a closer look via some leaked photos of the new threads on Icethetics:

As one of the teams that joined the NHL in the first wave of expansion in 1967, it's about time the Blues got back to a more traditional look.

St. Louis had been wearing their now discarded jerseys since 2007-08 when many teams redesigned their looks for the new Reebok Edge jerseys. It was not an improvement for the Blues, however. Despite one of the better crests in the league, the 2007-14 version of the Blues' jersey was routinely ranked as one of the worst in the league for its blandness. That distinction probably belongs to the Colorado Avalanche now, as their jerseys followed a similar model of the ones the Blues just finally got away from.

Hockey isn't a sport that's often focused on fashion, but the jerseys have always been an important part of the league's overall iconography. That is what makes this change especially welcome for one of the league's older franchise.
