DALLAS -- Stars coach Dave Tippett liked the mood of his team Friday afternoon. Rather than being frustrated over the way they'd played lately, his slumping players seemed intent on snapping out of a funk.

Did they ever.

Stu Barnes capped a hat trick with a short-handed goal, Jason Arnott scored twice and had an assist, and goaltender Marty Turco posted one of his best performances of the season, leading Dallas past the Chicago Blackhawks 9-1 Friday night.

The Stars matched their most goals since the franchise moved to Texas. With three coming on the power play, that equaled their total for the last five games in that category.

"The dressing room felt pretty good, but you never know," Tippett said. "It wasn't exuberance, just a determination -- a very determined mind-set ... that we were going to get something done tonight."

Dallas hadn't scored more than three times in a period this season, but had four goals in each of the first two periods of this game. It was so lopsided that when the Stars scored their sixth goal, the Blackhawks had taken six shots -- none of them going in.

"Everything that could go wrong did go wrong," Chicago's Kyle Calder said.

"It was awful all around, from our goaltender, from lines one through four," added teammate Matthew Barnaby. "Everyone out there was horrible and unacceptable."

Barnes opened the scoring 1:31 in. Midway through the first period, the Stars broke it open with three more goals in a span of 4 minutes, 12 seconds, sending goaltender Nikolai Khabibulin to the bench.

Dallas scored four more in the second period off his replacement, Craig Anderson, the first two coming 56 seconds apart.

Niko Kapanen scored No. 9 with 2:52 left in the third period, giving the Stars their most goals since Feb. 1, 1995. Then Dallas went on a power play in the final minute and fans began chanting "We want 10!"

They nearly got their wish, except Anderson made several solid saves. He angrily flicked the puck from his glove against the glass behind the net when time expired.

"We played a solid 60 minutes and that's important for us right now," Arnott said. "We haven't done that all year."

The Stars came in with only two wins in seven games, including three straight home losses. Turco sat out the last two games, using the layoff to work on fundamentals. Tippett had spent time discussing power-play problems with the unit's leader, defenseman Sergei Zubov.

Another aspect of Dallas' struggles was a lot of early shots but few early goals. So when the quick score was followed by the big burst, and Turco made a sprawling save on a two-on-one rush, everyone on the home bench was feeling pretty good.

"We were better from the start and that carried us through," Barnes said. "This type of effort and execution has to be something we expect of ourselves."

Bill Guerin, Jere Lehtinen and Brenden Morrow also scored for Dallas. Kapanen had three assists, and Guerin, Zubov, Philippe Boucher and Antti Miettinen each had two assists. Barnes also had an assist.

This was the sixth straight game the Blackhawks have allowed at least four goals; they lost five of them.

Rookie Mikael Holmqvist had Chicago's lone goal, making it 6-1.

The Stars got the goal back on Barnes' short-hander, which began with a steal at the Dallas blue line and ended with a low liner that went between Anderson's legs. He celebrated his first hat trick since Nov. 25, 1998, with a fist pump that Tiger Woods would've been proud of, holding his stick up in his pumping right arm for added oomph.

He came in with one goal all season, then went home with his fourth career hat trick.

"It's one of those crazy things where it just went right for me tonight," he said. "You don't necessarily plan for it. It just worked out."

Down 7-1, the Blackhawks' frustration finally began pouring out with plenty of scrums and penalties. Martin Lapointe got a fighting major and a slashing minor late in the second period, and Arnott scored his second goal of the game on the ensuing power play.

• The Stars last scored 10 goals on Nov. 28, 1992, when the franchise was still the Minnesota North Stars. They moved to Dallas for the 1993-94 season.
• Chicago last allowed nine goals on March 25, 2003, against the New York Islanders.
• Despite all the scoring by the Stars, captain Mike Modano ended a four-game point streak and a three-game goal streak.
• The Stars are 9-0-1 against the Blackhawks since April 2002.
• In the previous 14 meetings in Dallas, the Stars were 12-1-1-1 and outscored Chicago 56-26.
