Lehtinen scores go-ahead goal to keep Stars win streak alive

TORONTO -- Ed Belfour failed to make history against his former team.

Jon Klemm and Jere Lehtinen scored first-period goals, and Marty Turco made 19 saves to lead the Dallas Stars' to their fifth straight victory, 2-1 Saturday night over the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Belfour failed in his fourth attempt to move into second place on the NHL career wins list, and Dallas won for the 10th time in 11 games.

"It definitely would have been nice, but it didn't happen," Belfour said.

Belfour is stuck on 447 victories, tied with Hall of Famer Terry Sawchuk. The 40-year-old goalie, who made 32 saves, spent five seasons with Dallas and led the Stars to the Stanley Cup championship in 1999.

"He'll get his. No doubt it will be real soon," Turco said. "He gave them every chance in the world, but fortunately for us, we got a couple early and it held up."

Mats Sundin scored for the Maple Leafs, who have lost three straight and four of five.

The Maple Leafs went 0-for-7 on the power play and are 1-for-16 their past two games. Fans booed the home team at the final buzzer.

"Our offense is not doing anything," Sundin said. "Two goals in two games is not enough to win hockey games in this league."

Toronto failed to record a shot in the third period until Sundin scored with 8:19 left. It was his first goal in six games, dating to Nov. 26 against Montreal. Toronto coach Pat Quinn added Eric Lindros to the top line in the final 10 minutes and it paid off as he assisted on Sundin's goal.

"For sure, you need to shake it up," Sundin said.

Turco, whose strong play allowed Dallas to let Belfour go in 2002, appeared headed for a shutout before Sundin spoiled the chance.

Klemm jumped out of the penalty box and skated in on a breakaway before putting a shot off Belfour's glove. Belfour couldn't squeeze it, allowing Klemm to put the rebound in for his first goal of the season at 6:07 of the opening period.

Dallas has notched at least one power-play goal in a franchise record 17 games.

"How about that power-play streak? We joked about that one after the game. That will go down in the record books, but to draw it up from Klemm from (Martin) Skoula and (Stephane) Robidas, I don't know about that," Dallas coach Dave Tippett said with a smile.

Just over two minutes later, Mike Modano missed a pass that could have led to a breakaway, but he gathered the puck after it bounced off the boards and made a centering pass to Lehtinen, whose one-timer beat Belfour.

Dallas forward Brenden Morrow missed the net on a breakaway in the third.

The Maple Leafs emptied their net and put out an extra attacker with 20 seconds left, but failed to tie it.
