BOSTON -- The Boston Bruins finally played with some confidence.

The Bruins turned in a strong effort in the third period and got outstanding goaltending to win only their second game in their last seven at home Thursday night.

Alexei Zhamnov got the tiebreaking goal, his first score of the season, and Hannu Toivonen stopped 26 shots to lead the Boston Bruins to a 4-1 victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs.

"We played better with the lead than we have and tonight showed us we can do that," Toivonen said. "We needed to build confidence with the lead and we did that and got some points tonight."

Travis Green, Keith Primeau and Brad Stuart also scored, and Brian Leetch had three assists as Boston won for the second time in its last seven games at home.

The Bruins improved to 3-1-1 against the Maple Leafs this season, getting the first win for the home team in the five meetings.

Toronto, the league's third-highest scoring team in power-play opportunities, was 0-for-9 with the man advantage. Toivonen stopped two-man advantages in each of the first two periods.

"We've got to do a better job on the power-play," Maple Leaf defenseman Bryan McCabe said. "Those are key situations and when we don't produce we don't win."

Mikael Tellqvist had 21 saves for the Maple Leafs.

Green's fourth goal of the season gave the Bruins a 1-0 lead with 1:43 left in the first period.

Toronto tied the game at 1 at 12:50 of the second period as Mariusz Czerkawsi got his third goal of the year on a shot from just above the left faceoff circle.

"We're not consistent enough at putting the puck on the net and when you miss the net, it's basically a turnover," Toronto coach Pat Quinn said.

Zhamnov regained Toronto's lead on a backhander off a rebound at 15:52.

"Sometimes you forget what it feels like to score and getting that second one was very important for us tonight," Zhamnov said. "When I saw the empty net in front of me I almost lost the puck."

Primeau scored his first goal -- and his first point with the Bruins at 6:23 of the third period to give Boston a 3-1 lead. Stuart capped the scoring with a power-play goal with 32 seconds left in the game.

The teams conclude their home-and-home series Friday night at Toronto.
