Grier scores first goal in Sharks uniform; goalie Toskala perfect

    CBS wire reports

VANCOUVER, British Columbia -- Mike Grier scored a power-play goal in the first period and Vesa Toskala stopped all 25 shots he faced in the San Jose Sharks' 2-0 preseason win over the Vancouver Canucks on Tuesday night.

Ville Nieminen added an empty-net goal with 14 seconds left for San Jose (4-1), which held out its entire top line. Joe Thornton, last season's NHL MVP, will likely also miss Wednesday's game in Calgary after taking a shot off his foot in practice on Monday. Top goal scorer Jonathan Cheechoo stayed in San Jose because of a groin injury.

Grier tapped a rebound underneath Roberto Luongo as the Canucks goalie took a dive to smother the loose puck. That gave the former Buffalo Sabres forward his first point since signing with the Sharks during the offseason.

After giving up six goals in just over three periods to start the preseason, Toskala was at his best during an early power-play flurry. He wasn't tested again until a 12-shot third period. Toskala, who is competing with Evegeni Nabokov for the starting goalie job, made a couple of good saves on another power play with six minutes left to preserve the shutout.

Luongo made 26 saves while playing his second straight complete game. He stopped Patrick Marleau and Patrick Rissmiller on breakaways but it wasn't enough for the Canucks (1-4).

Vancouver dressed all of its top scoring forwards and leading defensemen except for Mattias Ohlund.
