TAMPA, Fla. -- The Boston Bruins rebounded quickly from a one-sided loss on opening night.

Patrice Bergeron scored the tiebreaking goal early in the third period and Brad Boyes had a goal and an assist in the Bruins' 3-2 victory over the Tampa Bay Lightning on Saturday night.

"What really impressed the coaches is that the guys responded and did the things you have to do to win hockey games," Boston coach Dave Lewis said. "It's just one game, but it's good to see that. It's a good feeling to come out of a building that's a home opener against a really good team and find a way to win a close hockey game. I like winning close hockey games."

Wayne Primeau also scored for the Bruins, who lost 8-3 at Florida on Friday night in their season opener.

"We played our game and got the result," Bergeron said.

Bergeron gave the Bruins a 3-2 lead 1:39 into the third when he scored off a pass from Boyes after a bad pass by Tampa Bay's Dmitry Afanasenkov.

"It was my mistake," Afanasenkov said. "I let the whole team down."

Boston captain Zdeno Chara had two assists.

"We had 24 hours to regroup and I think we did a good job," Chara said.

Bruins goalie Hannu Toivonen stopped 29 shots.

"I think we really, really did improve in our small things," Toivonen said. "Get the pucks in, get the pucks out. We made sure that we didn't have any bad turnovers out there in the critical zone. We played a lot better than last night as a team."

Ruslan Fedotenko and Ryan Craig scored for Tampa Bay, and Marc Denis made 22 saves in the Lightning's home opener.

The Lightning battled back from a 2-0 deficit for the second consecutive game when Fedotenko and Craig scored second-period goals. Tampa Bay trailed 2-0 after the first Thursday night in a 3-2 shootout win in Atlanta.

Tampa Bay coach John Tortorella wasn't happy with the play of his top two lines, giving his third line playing time in key situations late in the game.

"I think our top two lines need to take a lesson from that," Tortorella said.

Primeau put the Bruins up 1-0 at 5:24 of the first.

Boyes made it 2-0 when he redirected Chara's shot at 13:19. Rookie Phil Kessel, taken fifth overall in the 2006 draft, assisted on the goal for his first career point.

"It was a whole team effort," Boyes said.

Notes

  • Boston D Milan Jurcina (bruised elbow) missed his second straight game.
  • Tampa Bay had won its three previous home openers, outscoring the opposition 15-4.
  • Bruins RW Shean Donovan played in his 700th NHL game. He had an assist.
