Florida at Boston

Panthers 6, Bruins 3

CBS SportsLine.com wire reports

BOSTON -- The Florida Panthers don't look like one of the NHL's worst teams when they play the Boston Bruins.

Jozef Stumpel scored his second power-play goal of the game 4:10 into the final period to break a tie, and the Panthers went on to defeat the Bruins 6-3 on Saturday night.

The Panthers, who overcame three one-goal deficits to snap a four-game losing streak, had three power-play scores, twice scoring with a two-man advantage. Florida improved to 4-10-5 away from home, but it was their second win in Boston.

The Panthers are 3-0 against the Bruins this season.

"For whatever reason, we've had success against them this season," said Florida left wing Gary Roberts, who had an empty-net goal. "They're a good team, but we've played well against them."

Ville Peltonen, Rostislav Olesz and Ollie Jokinen scored for the Panthers. Stumpel also assisted on two goals.

The Panthers' own the second-worst record in the Eastern Conference with 28 points, only ahead of Philadelphia's 20.

"It seems like we'll get some teams we can play well against and some teams we struggle against," said Stumpel, a former Bruin. "We'd like to have more of these teams."

Glenn Murray scored his team-leading 15th and 16th goals for Boston, and Marco Sturm had the Bruins' other score.

"We can't beat them, they've proven that," Boston coach Dave Lewis said.

Twenty-one seconds after Brad Boyes was whistled for hooking and joined teammate Patrice Bergeron in the penalty box, Stumpel redirected Jokinen's shot from the point past goalie Tim Thomas for the winner.

The Panthers outshot the Bruins 36-21 and were 3-for-7 on the power play.

"It's hard to kill 5-on-3s," Boston right wing Shean Donovan said. "That makes for a long night. Teams that don't take penalties end up with points at the end of the season."

Jokinen scored from the edge of the crease, making it 5-3 at 13:32.

Seconds after goaltender Ed Belfour robbed Jason York on a 2-on-1 break, Sturm converted another 2-on-1 play off a nice feed from Bergeron to give Boston a 1-0 lead 3:22 into the game. The Panthers tied it 7:23 later when Stumpel scored his first power-play goal from in close with a two-man advantage.

Boston went up 2-1 when Murray fired a wrist shot into the far corner from the left wing two minutes into the second period for his 600th career point. But the Panthers tied it on Peltonen's power-play goal at 3:22, when he beat Thomas with a slap shot from the left circle.

Murray's second goal of the game, 12:18 into the second period, gave the Bruins a brief 3-2 edge. The Panthers tied it 19 seconds later when Olesz scored on a wrist shot off a faceoff.

Florida, which entered the game with the second-most goals allowed in the conference, outshot Boston 28-14 through the first two periods.

"We should feel good with what we did tonight, but realize we've got a big hill to climb," Roberts said.

Bruins rookie C Phil Kessel spoke with the media before the game after undergoing testicular cancer surgery Monday. Team internist Dr. David Judge termed the prognosis "excellent." ... Boston C Keith Primeau played his 600th career game. ... The Panthers' entered with the league's sixth best power play. ... Florida beat the Bruins 3-2 in the teams' other meeting in Boston on Nov. 20. ... Primeau had a goal waved off late in the second when Donovan was called for goaltender interference after colliding with Belfour.
