Chicago at Calgary

Blackhawks 3, Flames 2 (SO)

CALGARY, Alberta -- Faced with a two-goal deficit late in the game, the Chicago Blackhawks were far from worried.

Martin Havlat scored twice in the final three minutes and again in the shootout as the Blackhawks rallied for a 3-2 victory over the Calgary Flames on Tuesday night.

"We knew that until the 60th minute, it's not over," Havlat said. "Nobody was quitting until the last second and that's why we got the two points tonight."

Havlat's late scores spoiled what appeared to be shaping up as a shutout for Miikka Kiprusoff. Instead, Kiprusoff saw his shootout record drop to 1-10, including 0-3 this season.

Calgary led 2-0 until the final four minutes of the game, when three straight minor penalties the Flames led to a pair of power-play goals by Havlat to tie it.

"We put ourselves in a position to win," said Calgary's Jeff Friesen, who had one of the Flames' goals. "We've got to take it upon ourselves to take responsibility for giving away a point."

On a two-man advantage, Havlat's long shot from the point beat Kiprusoff at 17:17 to make it 2-1. With goaltender Nikolai Khabibulin pulled for an extra skater, the Blackhawks tied it with 28 seconds left when Havlat banged home a rebound.

"It's nice to have a guy that you can give him the puck and you never know when he's going to explode and make a move on a guy," Chicago defenseman Jassen Cullimore said. "You look at today for example, that shot on the second goal, he can pick corners. With other guys it's just try and hit the net."

The shootout ended quickly with Havlat scoring to put the Blackhawks in control after Kristian Huselius missed the net with his attempt.

After Alex Tanguay was stopped by Khabibulin, Chicago's Jeff Hamilton clinched it on a deke.

Friesen and Huselius scored in regulation for Calgary, which failed to pick up a point for the first time in eight games.

Friesen opened the scoring at 15:57 of the second period when he took a pass from Marcus Nilson behind the net and whipped a shot into the top corner over the outstretched glove of Khabibulin.

Calgary made it 2-0 at 4:08 on the power play when Huselius came off the side boards and fired a shot from the top of the faceoff circle through a crowd and past Khabibulin. Huselius has a 13-game point streak -- nine goals, 10 assists -- to tie him with Washington's Alexander Ovechkin for the longest streak of the season.

"We weren't really focused in the third to finish it off, that's a lesson for sure," Huselius said. "Now we have to refocus and go on the road again."

The night began with a 47-minute ceremony honoring Mike Vernon, whose No. 30 was retired.

Notes

The one shot for Chicago in the first period tied a franchise record for fewest shots in a period, previously done six times, including last month against Detroit. ... Calgary has twice surrendered no shots in a period. ... Chicago RW Peter Bondra was a healthy scratch. ... The Blackhawks improved to 2-1 on their season-high seven game road trip.
