Detroit at Chicago

Red Wings 4, Blackhawks 1

CHICAGO -- Kyle Calder got comfortable quickly with the Detroit Red Wings.

Calder had a goal and assist in Detroit's 4-1 victory over the Blackhawks on Tuesday night, a day after he was acquired in a three-way trade.

Tomas Holmstrom scored two goals and Dominik Hasek made 24 saves for the Red Wings, 10-2-2 in their last 14 games.

Calder's linemate, Johan Franzen also had a goal and an assist for the Red Wings, who improved to 5-0-0 against Chicago this season and 11-1-1 against the Blackhawks over the past two years.

Calder scored on his first shift, 1:46 into the game, to give Detroit a 1-0 lead.

"It was a good way to start, definitely the way I wanted it." Calder said. "It's nice to get it out of the way. You just keep working hard and that what you get, success."

Calder had played 59 games this season in Philadelphia, where he had nine goals and 12 assists. He moved from a team with the NHL's worst record to the Red Wings, who improved to 88 points and are tied with Nashville for the league's second-best record.

"It was great for him to get off to a good start and score that goal," Red Wings coach Mike Babcock said. "He's got good hands and he hangs on to the puck. His line tonight scored two goal, which is a real positive for our team."

Added Holmstrom: "It's not easy to come to a new team. It was great for him to score a goal right away, too."

Hasek lost a bid for his seventh shutout with a minute left in the third period when Jeff Hamilton scored on a wrist shot.

The Blackhawks are 1-4-2 in their last seven games. Their leading scorer, right wing Martin Havlat, sat out with the flu.

For most of the game, Hasek was only lightly tested.

"It was a frustrating loss," Chicago defenseman Duncan Keith said. "Obviously, it wasn't our best effort."

Jason Williams, who was sent from Detroit to Chicago in the deal for Calder, was in the Blackhawks' lineup. Chicago coach Denis Savard had hoped to play Williams on a line with Havlat.

And Williams was looking forward to skating with the Blackhawks only true offensive star.

"I know he's a very talented player, he's very fast and he uses his speed to back 'D' off and gives everyone else a little more room to create offense," Williams said. "Obviously with him out of the lineup, it's a little tougher."

Chicago's Nikolai Khabibulin blocked 24 shots.

Calder, who started his NHL career in Chicago, opened the scoring 1:46 into the first period.

After sneaking in behind the Chicago defense to the slot, Calder took Franzen's centering pass from behind the net and ripped it past Khabibulin.

Hasek came 15 feet out of the net to make a sliding pad save on Chicago's Rene Bourque with three seconds left in the first.

The Blackhawks had a 5-on-3 power-play for 1:35 early in the second, but managed only three shots on Hasek. One of their best chances was blocked and cleared by Detroit defenseman Andreas Lilja.

Holmstrom made it 2-0 with 7:09 left in the third. From the edge of the crease, he knocked in Pavel Datsyuk's centering pass from the left side of the net.

Franzen's spinning goal with 58 seconds left in the second period extended Detroit's lead to 3-0.

Holmstrom made it 4-0 with a power-play goal at 9:18 of the third. He converted a rebound of Datsyuk's shot.

Hasek stopped Patrick Sharp on a breakaway with 2:20 left, but the goalie's bid for career shutout No. 75 was ruined 1:20 later.

Notes
