Boston at Phoenix

Bruins 3, Coyotes 1 wire reports

GLENDALE, Ariz. -- The Boston Bruins snapped a seven-game losing streak and got their first win in Phoenix in 10 years, though it came with a price.

Marc Savard assisted on the first of the Bruins' two first-period goals in their 3-1 victory over the Coyotes, but left the game in the second period with what he described as a "core" injury and did not return.

"I went to take off and I felt something," the 30-year-old Savard said. "We'll work on it and hopefully we can locate the exact spot."

Bruins coach Claude Julien said Savard will be re-evaluated Sunday.

"There's no need to talk about that tonight," he said after the Bruins snapped a streak that dated back to last season.

Patrice Bergeron and Chuck Kobasew scored 38 seconds apart in the first period for the Bruins, who won in Phoenix for the first time since a 3-2 victory Oct. 8, 1997. The teams had met 11 times since but only four times in Phoenix.

Marco Sturm added a power-play goal and Tim Thomas made 36 saves for Boston.

"We didn't let them play the type of game they wanted to play," Thomas said. "We tried to play tight defensively, intercepting a lot of their passes and breaking up their momentum."

Niko Kapanen scored a power-play goal for the Coyotes, who were attempting to start a season 2-0 for the first time since 2003.

"I like the way we were shooting pucks to the net but we have to capitalize on our power play," said Coyotes coach Wayne Gretzky, whose club was 0-for-4 with the man-advantage. "We've got out work cut out for us."

Bergeron scored seven seconds after Phoenix's Derek Morris was whistled for hooking, beating Mikael Tellqvist on a wrist shot from the left faceoff circle at 4:09 of the first period.

Kobasew made it 2-0 just 38 seconds later when he took a short pass from Per Johan Axelsson at center-ice to start a 2-on-1 break before taking the shot himself from the right faceoff circle.

"It's good for confidence, for what it does for you," Julien said. "It's good to see you get rewarded for doing the things you're being asked to do."

Kapanen pulled Phoenix to 2-1 when Shane Doan's hard shot from the left faceoff circle deflected off his skate and past Thomas. Video replay officials reviewed the goal before ruling the deflection was incidental.

"I knew that I didn't kick the puck," Kapanen said.

But Sturm rifled a shot over Tellqvist's blocker from the left circle with 10:45 remaining to restore the Bruins' two-goal lead.

Boston's last victory was a 3-2 win at Ottawa on March 27. ... The Coyotes, who beat St. Louis 3-2 on Thursday, have not won consecutive games since January 20 and January 26, a span of 35 games. ... Savard recorded an assist on Bergeron's goal for his 499th career point. ... Phoenix C Steven Reinprecht was playing in his 400th career game.
