Stastny ends Luongo's shutout streak, Avalanche win in shootut

VANCOUVER, British Columbia -- Every win is big for Peter Budaj and the struggling Colorado Avalanche. But a comeback victory against counterpart Roberto Luongo and the Vancouver Canucks was extra special.

Paul Stastny tied it on an early third-period power play that also ended Luongo's three-game shutout streak, and Wojtek Wolski and Marek Svatos scored in the shootout to lift Colorado to a 2-1 victory against Vancouver on Wednesday night.

Alex Burrows matched Wolski's opening goal in the third round of the shootout, but Svatos won it with Colorado's final shot, roofing a shot over Luongo's glove.

"(Luongo) is playing on top of his game right now, so it's so much sweeter we were able to beat him," said Budaj, who stopped 31 shots in regulation and overtime, and two more in the shootout. "He's probably the hottest goalie in the league."

Budaj isn't far behind. Coming off a shutout of Nashville on Saturday that ended Colorado's five-game losing streak, the only goal he gave up against the Canucks came on Taylor Pyatt's penalty shot early in the second period.

Stastny got that back 1:28 into the third, ending Luongo's bid for a fourth consecutive shutout. With the goalie down on a power-play scramble, Stastny's third whack at the loose puck in the crease went up and over Luongo, ending his franchise-record shutout streak at 242 minutes, 36 seconds.

"I don't really care about the streak," said Luongo, who finished with 33 saves as the Canucks lost for only the second time in seven games (5-1-1). "The goal was the two points, and we fell short. That's more disappointing than anything else."

Despite having his shutout streak ended, Luongo was the biggest reason the Canucks got to overtime. After killing off a 62-second 5-on-3 power play with five minutes left, Luongo stopped Tyler Arnason's backhander from the slot with two minutes left, and slid cross crease to rob Wolski on a one-timer with 0.7 seconds left.

"You don't want to give up a chance like that at the end of the game," Luongo said. "We were able to get a point, but you can't be satisfied with the performance. We want to make sure we get the two points every night."

Colorado won without captain Joe Sakic, who stayed in Denver because of a sore back but could rejoin the team on its three-game trip through western Canada.

"Credit to the guys," Budaj said. "You're down 1-0 in Vancouver playing against the hottest goalie in the league, and we persevere and come back. It's a big win for us."

Luongo needed only to blank the Avalanche for 11 minutes, 5 seconds to pass the franchise -- and his own personal -- shutout record of 212 minutes, 12 seconds. By then he had already stopped 15 shots, including a sliding stop on Wolski on an early power play, a right-pad save on David Jones on a 3-on-1 rush six minutes in, and stuffing Stastny on a point-blank one-timer from the top of the crease only four seconds before matching the record he set last December.

"Louie kept us in the in the first period," Canucks coach Alain Vigneault said.

Pyatt opened the scoring 2:43 into the second after Ruslan Salei broke his stick with a slash on a breakaway. On the ensuing penalty shot, Pyatt faked a deke before snapping a shot past Budaj's glove.

Vancouver had several chances to extend its lead, but couldn't put the puck past Budaj, who got some help from Canucks shooters. After Steve Bernier and Daniel Sedin missed open nets earlier, Mason Raymond and Henrik Sedin shot into a sprawling Budaj with the top of the net open on a third-period power play.

"Luongo played an amazing game, but Peter stepped up last game for us with a shutout and this game they had so many good scoring chances in front of the net, and he just seemed to keep us in it -- especially on the penalty kill," said Wolski, who along with Svatos also assisted on Stastny's goal.
