St. Louis at San Jose

Blues 3, Sharks 2 (SO)

CBSSports.com wire reports

SAN JOSE, Calif. -- T.J. Oshie had a feeling he would see something different from San Jose goalie Evgeni Nabokov. He guessed right.

Oshie and Andy McDonald scored in the shootout to give the St. Louis Blues a 3-2 victory against the Sharks on Thursday night.

"I had a feeling he was going to use a poke check on me," Oshie said. "We've seen it before and he didn't use it on the first two guys. I was going for the five-hole. I figured it was going to be open."

Carlo Colaiacovo scored a short-handed goal with seven seconds remaining in regulation to tie it at 2 for the Blues.

"Every time we play San Jose it seems like it's a lot of emotion," Oshie said. "We both play physical, play strong, play with heavy sticks on the puck."

Patrick Marleau netted a goal in the shootout for the Sharks, who had a three-game winning streak stopped. Dany Heatley and Joe Pavelski scored in regulation.

Jay McClement had the other regulation goal for the Blues, and Ty Conklin made 32 saves -- including several quality attempts against the NHL's top offense.

"Our penalty killing did a great job of stepping up," Blues coach Andy Murray said. "Our penalty killing has been solid all year. Our Achilles' heel has been our failure to generate on power plays and offense."

Nabokov stopped 28 shots, but the Sharks allowed their fifth short-handed goal of the season, and the fourth in the past three home games.

"Our power play let us down," Sharks coach Todd McLellan said. "We had five of the greatest hockey players in the world out there and the power play let us down when we needed a goal and again when we gave up a goal. I'm very disappointed and, obviously, not very happy about it."

Heatley scored his 19th goal at 1:19 of the first, one of seven shots he took in the period. Joe Thornton found the wide-open Heatley for a 50-foot slap shot that sailed cleanly into the net.

"What we did was let him wear his arms out in the first period and he didn't have any energy to shoot again," Murray said. "He's just a great player."

Heatley ended his season-worst, four-game streak without a goal. Thornton extended his point streak to 10 games (three goals, 15 assists).

The Blues tied it at 11:06 when Alexander Steen fed McClement for a one-timed, left-handed shot from the right side. The puck knuckled into the far side top corner.

McClement scored his second goal in 16 games after netting three in his first 10.

Pavelski gave the Sharks a 2-1 edge midway through the second period, redirecting a shot from Douglas Murray. Ryane Clowe powered his way along the boards to protect the puck and passed it to Murray.

Only 20 seconds after Nabokov made a kick save on Barrett Jackman, Colaiacovo took a pass from Keith Tkachuk and made a nice spin move to score the tying goal.

"I thought we played pretty well," Sharks defenseman Marc-Edouard Vlasic said. "We had the power play, and Coach just told us they would be coming. We just gave it up."

Heatley tied a franchise record with seven shots in the first period. ... Tkachuk has 65 points in 66 games against the Sharks. ... D Jay Leach participated in his first skate with the Sharks, but didn't play. ... Colaiacovo returned to the ice after missing Monday's game at Columbus. ... Clowe has a point in eight consecutive games. ... Sharks F Ryan Vesce was recalled from Worcester of the AHL.
