Avalanche forward P.A. Parenteau is likely to miss the rest of the regular season after sustaining a knee injury in the first period of Monday night’s game against the Winnipeg Jets. Parenteau may be able to return for the playoffs, but according to head coach Patrick Roy, he will need four to six weeks to recover.

Parenteau was injured after taking a hit from Jets defenseman Mark Stuart. The Avalanche forward seemed to get his right leg folded up under him as he fell to the ice and in the process injured his MCL.

This is the second knee injury of Parenteau’s season. He injured the MCL in his left knee and missed 10 games earlier this year.

Injuries for any team at this stage of the season are ill timed. The Avs have a pretty comfortable cushion in the Central Division to make the playoffs as they are 13 points clear of the Minnesota Wild for third place and the last divisional playoff slot. The Avs have sights set on a divisional title, however, as they are five points behind the red-hot St. Louis Blues.

Colorado was already without Paul Stastny, who did not dress for Monday’s game due to a back injury. There’s no clear timetable on Stastny’s return as of yet, but that’s two key forwards out at least for now.

Losing Parenteau means a significant hit to Colorado’s secondary scoring for the rest of the regular season. The 30-year-old winger has 14 goals and 33 points this season, good for sixth on the team.

The Avs have recalled forwards Paul Carey and Brad Malone from the American Hockey League to replace Stastny and Parenteau.
