Canucks acquire Derek Dorsett from Rangers
The Canucks added depth forward Derek Dorsett to their club during a busy day of trading for rookie GM Jim Benning.
The busiest day of Vancouver Canucks rookie general manager Jim Benning’s brief career got busier as he acquired Derek Dorsett from the New York Rangers. Benning also sent the 85th overall selection acquired from the Anaheim Ducks as part of the Ryan Kesler trade back to New York.
The Canucks add a bit of a grit factor with Dorsett, who will help fill a role in the bottom six for Vancouver. The 27-year-old winger had eight points and 128 penalty minutes in 51 games for the Rangers last season. He also played a solid checking-line role during the playoffs, taking some hard shifts as the Rangers made it all the way to the Stanley Cup Final.
Dorsett is not going to bring much by way of offense, but this addition very well could be part of a larger plan Benning has that remains unclear. Dorsett won't cost them much, though.
The Canucks have now dealt a top forward in Ryan Kesler to Anaheim and a top-four defenseman in Jason Garrison to the Tampa Bay Lightning. Whatever comes next will be rather interesting to watch, but the Canucks will have some flexibility heading into the draft and even further into free agency.
The Rangers may have been looking to shed some salary as they have multiple restricted free agents to sign in the coming weeks. Dorsett won't save them much with a cap hit at $1.63 million, but it does help make a little room as the league's salary cap is expected to be slightly lower than previously projected next season.
