Canucks introduce John Tortorella as new coach
John Tortorella is the new coach of the Vancouver Canucks.
The Vancouver Canucks announced Tuesday morning that John Tortorella will be taking over behind the bench as the 17th coach in franchise history.
The announcement had been expected for nearly a week.
“We are proud to introduce John Tortorella as Head Coach of the Vancouver Canucks,” general manager Mike Gillis said in a team statement. “John has coached championship teams and is passionate about winning. He has a proven ability to bring the best out of his players, and we believe he has all of the qualities to bring our team success.”
Tortorella most recently spent four full seasons with the New York Rangers, taking them as far as the Eastern Conference finals last season. He was fired after the team lost in the second round to the Boston Bruins this year.
He replaces Alain Vigneault, who is replacing Tortorella in New York.
