Evgeni Malkin out 2-3 weeks with foot injury
Evgeni Malkin will miss the next 2-3 weeks with a foot injury according to head coach Dan Bylsma, which is a rather unfortunate this time of year.
Per Coach Bylsma: #Pens Evgeni Malkin has a foot injury and will be out 2-3 weeks.— Pittsburgh Penguins (@penguins) March 25, 2014
That timeline could potentially end Malkin’s regular season. The Pens' last game is on April 13, which is just over three weeks away. As with any injury this close to the playoffs, there's plenty of cause for concern.
Losing a top player on a team that has some serious depth issues is a tough blow, especially this close to the playoffs. It’s been this way all year for the Penguins, however, which have had numerous injuries to star players this season.
Oddly enough, Sidney Crosby has been the healthiest of them all, playing in all 71 games so far. That hard knocking you hear is Dan Bylsma and the nearest plank of wood.
Malkin, who has already missed 11 games this season, is the team’s second leading scorer with 72 points. If this is an issue that persists, the Pens could be in some serious peril come playoff time.
Pittsburgh is 5-4-1 in their last ten and are unlikely to catch the Boston Bruins for the top spot in the Eastern Conference. With or without Malkin, it would be a near impossible feat as the B’s hold a seven-point advantage currently with the Pens only holding one game in hand.
This will be a situation worth monitoring closely as the postseason rapidly approaches.
