GIF: Alex Ovechkin, Evgeni Malkin have fun in photos with Putin
Russia is celebrating its 2014 IIHF World Championship title, including visiting Vladimir Putin in Moscow. In their photo ops, Alex Ovechkin and Evgeni Malkin had a little fun.
Following a disappointing Olympics, hockey-mad Russia has been in quite the celebratory mood this week. The Russians won the 2014 IIHF World Championships in nearby Belarus and have been feted in Moscow almost as if they won the Stanley Cup.
Part of all the celebrations was a ceremony at the Kremlin with Russian President (and hockey
player star) Vladimir Putin. One by one players came up to meet the president, who attached pins to their suit jackets and posed for pictures.
First up was Ovechkin, who strutted up to Putin, had a brief chat and then, completely casually, threw up the sideways peace sign (or victory sign, whichever) next to Putin. The president's reaction was subtle but great. From Russian Machine Never Breaks:
From the looks of it, it seemd that Ovechkin and Malkin were having a small battle to see who could have the funnier photo with the president because Malkin one-upped Ovi.
Of course it's a bit easier to be so cool around the authoratative leader of a massive country like Russia when he was partying in street clothes with you and your team a few days earlier (via Reddit).
Russia sure knows how to celebrate a World Championship.
