GIF: Magic puck bounces out off post, still goes in net
Forget Ray Whitney, Marek Zidlicky might be a wizard. His shot magically changed directions and went in for a goal on Saturday. OK it was backspin.
The phrase "getting all the bounces" is heard often in sports but usually not hockey. In hockey we talk about puck luck (because rhyming is fun ... and because ideally the puck isn't supposed to bounce).
The Devils had both working in his favor on Saturday night.
Marek Zidlicky got loose a shot from the point that beat Hurricanes goalie Anton Khudobin but hit the post. It looked like it was going to stay out of the net but the puck had a mind of its own and did a U-turn.
It was magic.
The video reveals the magician's secrets -- the puck was off the ice and when it hit, backspin took effect and sent it across the goal line, with the help of a Travis Zajac deflection. But it's a lot more fun to marvel at the overhead view, isn't it?
It's certainly about time the Devils got something to go in their favor this season as they have been simply snakebitten. Still, thanks in part to Zidlicky's magical abilities, the Devils beat the Canes are are only one point back of playoff position in the East.
