Morning buzz

Phoenix Coyotes goalie Mike Smith had to leave Thursday's 2-1 loss to the Vancouver Canucks after the second period. During that period he was on the receiving end of the hit shown above by Alex Edler, who received a five-minute major for charging Smith behind the net.

Just in case you needed a reminder, goaltenders are not fair game to be hit when they leave their crease, so a major there is pretty justified.

It's not the first time Smith has been involved in that kind of an incident behind his net as he was also hit by Chicago's Andrew Shaw during last year's playoffs. Shaw was suspended three games for that hit.

The NHL has already said that Edler will have a disciplinary hearing on Friday for the hit.

The Winnipeg Jets had a chance to open up a four-point lead in the Southeast Division thanks to Carolina's loss to New Jersey, but ended up getting shutout by the Capitals.

Jets coach Claude Noel on the loss: "They're playing chess, we're playing checkers." [Recap]

Speaking of the Southeast, the only team in that division with a positive goal differential is the Tampa Bay Lightning at plus-8, and they are probably already out of the playoff race. Last season no team finished with a positive goal-differential. What a division. [Standings]

P.K. Subban scored two more goals for the Canadiens during their win over the New York Islanders on Thursday night giving him nine goals and 22 points in 24 games this season. He's now up to third in the NHL in scoring among defensemen, trailing only Pittsburgh's Kris Letang and Minnesota's Ryan Suter. [Recap]

Sportsnet's John Shannon reported on Thursday that the NHL is investigating high-stick penalty reviews when it was actually a teammate's stick that caused the penalty. If everybody signs off on it, it would be ready for the playoffs. [John Shannon Twitter]
