NHL Playoffs: Grades for Night 21
Grades for Night 21 of the postseason.
|A-||The Red Wings controlled play for most of the game and were forcing the Blackhawks to make mistakes. Detroit played with energy and took away time and space from the Blackhawks skaters throughout the night. Despite some controversy, the better team clearly won Monday night.|
|C||A lapse in the second period led to two quick goals and a 2-0 deficit that seemed to really throw the Blackhawks off their game. That said, Chicago managed to come back a bit in the third period, but were cost by an apparent blown call on what would have been the game-tying goal. It still wasn't a great night for the Hawks overall.|
|A-||Jimmy Howard once again came through in a big way for the Red Wings with a 39-save effort. When the Wings needed him to make big saves, he did. He had some good D in front of him, but Howard was reliable, just like he has been much of the postseason.|
|B+||Jonathan Ericsson has had the tough assignment of keeping an eye on Jonathan Toews and has done it expertly. Ericsson has been able to get under the Chicago captain's skin throughout the series. The big defenseman logged 23-plus tough minutes and was a big part of stifling the Blackhawks.|
|F||The referees appeared to miss two calls in the third period that both figured prominently in the game, none bigger than Chicago's disallowed goal in the third period that would have tied the game. That was a game-altering call and that can't happen at this level.|
