NHL rumors: Michael Del Zotto, Dan Girardi being shopped by Rangers
New York Rangers GM Glen Sather is reportedly shopping Michael Del Zotto and Dan Girardi and is willing to make some deals after the holiday trade freeze is lifted.
New York Rangers general manager Glen Sather may be looking to make some moves after the NHL’s holiday trade freeze is lifted. Defensemen Michael Del Zotto and Dan Girardi are actively being shopped according to Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun.
Del Zotto could be a target of the struggling Ottawa Senators according to Garrioch:
The Senators have shown interest in Del Zotto because GM Bryan Murray would like to get a puck-mover. But he has give up at least one or two contracts because he can’t take on more cash, which means either Patrick Wiercioch or Eric Gryba could be part of any deal.
The issue with Del Zotto is he has struggled big time and several scouts have returned to their GMs with scouting reports that are less than positive.
It seems there’s a Del Zotto trade rumor every week, as he’s never really established himself in Alain Vigneault’s system with the Rangers. Darren Dreger of TSN also mentioned Ottawa as a possible destination for the struggling blueliner.
Dreger "I wouldn't be at all surprise if once the trade freeze lifts NY makes that trade and Del Zotto goes to Ottawa"— Hope_Smoke (@Hope_Smoke) December 23, 2013
Girardi is a surprising trade chip however. He plays big minutes for the Rangers and has been an important part of their defense for years now. He would become an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season and likely would command a solid return for the Rangers from a team looking to shore up its D.
Considering the Rangers are in the Metropolitan Division, they’re certainly not out of the playoff hunt at this point, but there are plenty of holes in the lineup to address. So any trade they are going to make is going to be with this season in mind, as opposed to shopping for draft picks or prospects.
Getting some scoring help and potentially finding some better fits on Vigneault’s blue line are likely targets for the Rangers.
Sather probably has a fairly short list of untouchable players – based on Garrioch’s report, Chris Kreider, Rick Nash and Henrik Lundqvist are among them -- but based on multiple reports he is ready to make some deals. That could make the Rangers a very interesting player on the trade market after Christmas.
