NHL rumors: Sharks talk extension with Marleau, Thornton, Boyle
The Sharks re-signed one veteran in Joe Pavelski on Tuesday, could each of Patrick Marleau, Joe Thornton and Dan Boyle follow suit?
The San Jose Sharks have a lot of money coming off the books after this season, even more so before Tuesday began.
For it was on Tuesday that the Sharks announced they have signed Joe Pavelski, a free agent after this next season, to a new five-year extension. But he is hardly the only veteran who is -- or was -- set to go into the final season of his current contract. The same goes for key players Dan Boyle, Patrick Marleau and captain Joe Thornton.
Considering they are all a bit more gray in the beard than Pavelski -- and Logan Couture, who also received a $6 million-per-season extension this summer -- it's fair to wonder if they are all going to be back for more beyond the upcoming season. GM Doug Wilson would like to make it happen.
Speaking at Pavelski's contract announcement on Tuesday, Wilson said that he has also had discussions with all three veterans mentioned above. Whether they are in the preliminary stages or beyond was unclear.
Between the three of them you are talking about almost $21 million in salary for next season, so re-signing them to extensions would likely cost about the same amount of money per season you'd figure. They are guys who could still get significant pay on the open market if it came to that.
The Sharks already have almost $45 million committed to the cap for the 2014-15 season without those three, but remember that the cap is expected to take a sharp rise next season as hockey-related revnues continue to climb. Fitting them in under the cap probably wouldn't be an issue.
However the Sharks ownership has been rather vocal about not turning profits and it becoming harder and harder to be a cap team. It still seems tough to believe considering they sell out all of their games and are perennial playoff team, but that's their story and they are sticking to it. Would they be OK paying a lot of money to keep three familiar faces around? If Wilson is talking to them about extensions then we would seem to have the answer.
