NHL Rumors: Will Brian Burke steal draft by moving up big again?

Will Burke get creative or just stay at No. 5 in the draft?. (US Presswire)

When he has the chance to, Brian Burke is usually going to do something big, just like he did in 2000 when he drafted the Sedin twins Nos. 2 and 3 overall while in Vancouver. Could Burke have something similar up his sleeve again this summer in Toronto?

It's just hearsay at this point but Igor Larionov, now the agent for top prospects Nail Yakupov and Alex Galchenyuk, had this to say in a recent interview.

"Tambellini told me: 'We like him. We want him. But we're going to make a decision the day before the draft.' I also know the Habs want to get one of my guys -- either Nail or Alex [Galchenyuk]. So do the Leafs. It is possible that the Leafs are going to trade their draft pick and get both of them. There is a possibility like that. Nail and Alex went to New Jersey for Game 2 of the Stanley Cup Final. After this they met Leafs GM Brian Burke. Then Nail met with the Habs."

Oilers Nation

While Yakupov and Galchenyuk aren't exactly the Sedins, they are compatriots who have been playing on the same junior team in the Sarnia Sting, so there's some chemistry already between them. Especially in a draft that isn't very deep, the ability to get two of the players who are highly regarded on a skill level would be a coup.

The question is does Burke have enough at his disposal to be able to turn the No. 5 pick into a pair of picks in the top two or three? He already dealt with the ramifications of sending first-round draft picks to another team and watched the Boston Bruins take Tyler Seguin in what was Toronto's draft position.

It seems far-fetched to me that he could pull off another magic show, but with Burke you never can count anything out.
