Pekka Rinne to miss at least four weeks with hip scope
The Nashville Predators were dealt a huge blow on Thursday as Pekka Rinne will miss at least four weeks with a hip scope.
What exactly happened? It sounds like a case of extremely unfortunate luck.
Rinne developed a spontaneous bacterial infection per Poile. Had soreness and fever coming to practice yesterday— The Predatorial (@ThePredatorial) October 24, 2013
The Predators have relied on Rinne more than any team has relied on one goalie in recent years. Coming into this season that was not going to be any different as the Preds were going with Carter Hutton, he of one previous NHL game, as the backup to Rinne. The assumption was that Rinne was going to start 72-plus games again. Now Hutton will be pressed into action.
Also, the Predators have called up rookie Magnus Hellberg, another big Scandavian goalie they picked up in the draft a couple years ago. So for those counting at home, the Predators have two goalies with a combined three games of experience at the NHL level going forward.
It's still early in the season but this is going to be a massively critical stretch for the Predators. How well can they survive the loss of their backbone for four weeks or more?
Rinne is 4-4-1 this season with a .917 save percentage and a 2.31 goals against average.
