The New York Islanders haven’t have had much to celebrate lately, but their history is indeed rich. With this being the club’s final season on Long Island before moving to Brooklyn, there will be many tributes to the glory of years past. One such tribute will be found on the mask of recent free agent goalie acquisition David Leggio.

Though Leggio may not see time with the Isles as a career minor leaguer, his mask sure does a nice job of capturing the past. On one side of his new mask rests the likeness of legendary goal scorer Mike Bossy, who starred with the Islanders from 1977 to 1987. On the other side, legendary coach Al Arbour, who led the team to each of its four consecutive Stanley Cups from 1980-83.

Here’s a look at the mask designed by David Gunnarsson, who has been on fire with the goalie mask designs this summer:

On the mask you will find Islanders legends Mike Bossy and the coach Al Arbour. All created in a classic old school style, using a brush and blue paint.

The paintings are built into the design which is created in and old school style with the awesome colors and logos of Islanders in focus. The four horizontal lines on each sides symbolize the 4 cups of the club.

From the colors to the historical homages, it’s a pretty great bucket for Leggio. Hopefully he’ll get a chance to show it off at some point. Otherwise he’ll still be able to wear it as a member of the American Hockey League’s Bridgeport SoundTigers. At least the colors will match.

Leggio spent last season with the Hershey Bears in the AHL. He appeared in 45 games and posted a 23-18-3 record and .913 save percentage.
