PHOTO: Henrik Lundqvist's Olympics mask features many crowns
When your national team's jersey already has crowns on it and your nickname is King Henrik, you're going to have a lot of crowns on your goalie mask.
Whenever Sweden takes the ice, they already look like royalty with their Three Crowns logo on their jerseys. That makes for an easy transition into mask art for “King” Henrik Lundqvist. The New York Rangers netminder unveiled the mask design he will sport during the 2014 Olympic Winter Games with Team Sweden and there are many crowns, as you'd expect.
Lundqvist already has a trademark crown design which he sports on his New York masks as well, so designer Dave Gunnarsson incorporated that into his mask.
Gunnarsson shares the story behind the mask:
In focus are the glittering Swedish crowns, surrounded by a clean cut Lundqvist graphics in the Swedish colors, creating the design into a 100% Swedish piece.
I love to go crazy in the details with the airbrush, and make it into a design that works both on a distance, and when you come closer and closer a new dimension of details opens up, making it a 2 designs in 1.
One of the best parts of the buildup to the Olympics is the unveiling of the goalie masks. It’s always interesting to see how the goalies incorporate their national pride with their personal style. The results so far for Sochi have been pretty excellent overall.
