The Winter Classic, at its heart, pays tribute to the origins of hockey. Played outdoors still today by kids and adults around the world on frozen ponds and streams or flooded basketball courts, many feel hockey is in its purest form just that way.

Maple Leafs goalie Jonathan Bernier wanted to pay tribute to pond hockey with his Winter Classic mask and designer Dave Gunnarsson delivered, as he so often does.

More from DaveArt.com:

The design is a tribute to the origin of true hockey, kids playing hockey on a pond. Golden memories from our childhood. When Jonathan told me his wishes for his design I immediately came up with a plan how to create it.

Kids are playing on the pond with their friends and in the goal is a parent, and lots and lots of details in the background creates a nice depth to the design.

The mask also obviously features the Winter Classic and the Maple Leafs’ fantastic throwback logo they’ll have on their jerseys in Ann Arbor. It's all tied together quite nicely.

It’s a really beautiful mask and a great tribute to hockey’s most simplistic and often most beautiful state.
